Big Band music charts are full of signs instructing players to ‘go to the Coda’ - basically the musicians road map to take the tune towards home. On Tuesday April 8 The Bayside Big Band and the Stelly’s Jazz band will be taking their jazz choruses to Victoria’s newest home for live music - The Coda Club. One of the longest running Big Bands in Greater Victoria, The Bayside Big Band of Victoria takes the Coda Club audience on a musical trip back in time, recreating the instrumental choruses of original jazz standards with an occasional foray into contemporary styles. The band maintains a vintage library of charts from the golden age of Big Bands staying true to a 17- piece formula of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, bass, guitar, drums, piano and vocalist. Our set lists include traditional swing and Latin tunes, modern ballads, even funk/rock numbers, and jazz vocals featuring Flo Pugh - who has delighted audiences for years with her spirited solo performances in the Peninsula Singers. We look forward to sharing the bill with these talented music students of Stelly’s Sr. Secondary School. The Stelly’s Secondary School Jazz Band is made up of 20 students ranging from grade 9-12. Directed by Norbert Ziegler the band plays about 5 concerts a year in and around the community. They perform a wide variety of music from traditional swing to Latin and even rock tunes. The band is excited to make their first appearance at The Coda Club alongside the Bayside Big Band. Proceeds from this concert’s ticket sales will help fund the Stelly’s jazz program.
